这是一个三十年代发生在奥地利的真实故事。

那是奥地利，也是全世界的最后美好时光。大家一如往常一样幸福地生活着。但是马上就会有一场巨大的灾难降临到人们的头上。

在萨尔斯堡的一个修道院里，一个叫玛利亚的见习修女让那些麽麽们很头痛，她未免有点活泼过了头，还常私自跑出修道院。院长就决定让她给一位退役海军上校的孩子们做家庭教师，让她再考虑一下，到底能否适应修道院的生活。

上校有7个孩子，自从妻子去世后，他就象管理军舰一样管理孩子们。玛利亚的到来给这个家庭重新带来了欢乐和歌声，她获得了孩子们的喜爱，也赢得了上校的爱情。

但是，急于想和富有的上校结婚的男爵夫人用计把玛利亚赶回了修道院。孩子们并不喜欢这个装摸做样的男爵夫人，然而上校就要和男爵夫人结婚了。

在修道院里，院长麽麽了解了情况后，劝玛利亚要面对生活，修道院并不是逃避困难的场所。玛利亚在院长麽麽的鼓励下又回到了孩子们的身边。

相爱的人终于结合在了一起，孩子们也有了一个好妈妈。

但是，灾难开始了。

纳粹吞并了奥地利，他们要上校为德国人服务。上校不愿意为纳粹工作，他们全家在朋友和麽麽们的帮助下，逃到了自由国度——瑞士。 他们美丽的歌声鼓励着德占区的同胞们。
